How to use

  1. Type or paste text into the box. Every count updates live as you type, no button needed.
  2. "Words" counts each English word once and each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character once, so mixed-language text is counted fairly. A run of digits counts as one word.
  3. Reading time assumes about 230 English words or 400 CJK characters per minute; speaking time assumes about 150 words or 250 CJK characters per minute. Use "Clear" to start over.

FAQ

How are words counted?

Anything separated by spaces counts as one word, so "don't" and "well-known" are one word each. Numbers like 2024 or 3.14 count as one word. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count one per character, because those languages don't put spaces between words.

Does punctuation count?

Punctuation is not included in the word count, but it is included in both character counts. The punctuation total is shown separately.

Why is my count different from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?

Each editor splits text slightly differently, especially around dashes, slashes, URLs, emoji and standalone symbols. The difference is usually only a few words, well under 1% for typical text.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. Everything is counted in your browser. The text is never sent to a server or stored, and it disappears when you close the page.
